Decide retention against an actual policy and any regulatory obligation rather than defaulting to "keep everything forever", which is how backup bills get out of hand. Second, the Microsoft 365 point is worth stating plainly: Microsoft operates the service and protects against their infrastructure failing, but recovering a mailbox a departed employee deleted four months ago, or rolling SharePoint back past a ransomware encryption event, is your responsibility. The shared-responsibility model is not intuitive and most businesses discover it at the worst possible moment.

Not in the sense most people mean. Microsoft replicates for service availability and provides limited recycle-bin and retention windows. It does not give you point-in-time restore months back, and it will not roll you back past a ransomware event or a malicious admin.
